Chief of Staff halts demolition of CSIR bungalows – Frimpong Boateng reveals

The Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Prof. Frimpong Boateng, has asked agitating CSIR management and staff to remain calm over sale of their lands to a private developer.

The staff and management physically halted a demolition exercise by a private developer of some bungalows located at Labone here in Accra.

They later followed up with a protest last week against the move by government to sell their land.

The issue is now receiving the attention of the Chief of Staff, Frema Opare-Osei, and will be resolved, according to Prof. Frimpong Boateng.

He made this revelation when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament to answer to questions relating to the 2017 Auditor-General’s Report on Public Boards.

Commenting further, Prof. Frimpong Boateng said the matter is also being looked into by the sector ministers of Lands and Works and Housing.

Akufo-Addo elected new ECOWAS Chairman

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been elected Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The election was held at the 57th ECOWAS Summit held in Niamey, Niger, on Monday, September 7, 2020.

The President, who was elected unanimously by his peers, takes over the mantle of leadership from the President of Niger, His Excellency Mahamadou Issoufou, for a period of one year.

Following in the footsteps of his predecessors, their Excellencies Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, and John Dramani Mahama, who have enjoyed, in times past, a similar privilege, President Akufo-Addo thanked the Assembly for the honour, and assured that he will do his utmost not to let the side down, and discharge his duties to the best of his abilities.

“Excellencies, I am fully aware of the challenges which confront West Africa. Past leaders of ECOWAS have demonstrated their collective will and determination to drive the agenda of regional integration, opening up our economic frontiers, encouraging healthy competition amongst Member States, and ensuring that we adhere to our formative principles,” he said.

The President continued, “As much as considerable progress has been made since the establishment of ECOWAS, some forty-five (45) years ago, we are all agreed that there is much more to be done to consolidate the socio-economic and political gains made over the years.”

In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo noted that five immediate challenges face the regional organization of ECOWAS, for which Member States must address.

These, he said, are the continuing activities of terrorists in the Region concentrated, for the time being, in the Sahelian area, involving Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and the northern parts of Nigeria; the the COVID-19 pandemic, which has attacked the populations and economies of each Member States; the imminent coming into force of the African Continental Free Trade Area on 1st January 2021; the 2020 decision on monetary union within the ECOWAS space; and the consolidation of democratic governance in the turbulent conditions of the Community.

“The challenges, in these critical regional spheres, such as security, economy, trade, currency and health, must be addressed in a spirit of genuine co-operation and solidarity, if we are to succeed in overcoming them, which we can. In so doing, we must protect, at all costs, our freedom and independence of action, so that the development of our Community responds to the needs and aspirations of our peoples, and not to the goals of external agencies and forces. I am confident that, by the grace of God, I can count on the unstinting support of each one of Your Excellencies in navigating the immediate future of our Community,” he added.

The President urged his fellow Heads of State to recognise that the way forward is to implement regional decisions, such as the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, recognising that, ultimately, the benefits are in everyone’s interest.

“Those of us who believe strongly in integration can do no better than to give our full support to regional decisions. Through this, we will build institutional confidence and integrity in the structural organs of ECOWAS,” he said.

To this end, he admonished Members of the ECOWAS Community to “collaborate to ensure that we adhere to and maintain common values of governance, i.e. the principles of democratic accountability, respect for individual liberties and human rights, and the rule of law. Such commonality will facilitate immeasurably the process of bonding amongst the peoples of our Community.”

In conclusion, he urged all in ECOWAS to “give enthusiastic support to Community decisions, and build rapidly our Community. Our peoples deserve no less, and the objectives of peace, progress and prosperity will, thus, be within our reach, realising the historic purposes of ECOWAS.”

Thank you for ‘One Village One Dam’ policy – Chereponi Chief

The Paramount Chief of Chereponi Traditional Area, Nanyame Kofi Malba VIII, has lauded Government for its targeted, pro-poor policies which are transforming the lives of many, especially rural dwellers.

Welcoming Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is on a working visit to all five northern regions, to his palace on Saturday, 5th September 2020, Nanyame Malba expressed deep appreciation for these initiatives, which continue to touch lives every day.

“Your Excellency, we wish to thank you and your government for all the good works you are doing to transform Ghana.

“The several pro-poor policies and programmes by your government like the One Village One Dam, One District One Factory, Free SHS, Planting for Food and Jobs, expansion of the LEAP programme, NABCO, the expansion of electricity to many rural communities amongst others are highly laudable.”

The Chereponi chief was particularly happy with the One Village One Dam policy, which had extended the farming season and provided essential water for livestock, thus eliminating the yearly ritual of near starvation and famine.

The Chereponi Chief continued:

“I also commend your government for the intervention in providing Chereponi with a town water system. Indeed, we all acknowledge the significance of providing just a dug out as source of water for humanity, how much more providing the entirety of this town with potable drinking water.”

The Overlord of Chereponi also expressed deep appreciation to government for the peace Chereponi now enjoys, as well as the successful effort to create the North East Region, which has led to massive improvements in infrastructure.

“More dear to the heart and wellbeing of the people of Chereponi is the peace and harmony we enjoy now. The Chiefs and people of Chereponi are grateful to your government for the interventions made to restore the peace in Chereponi for development,” Nanyame Malba VIII stated.

Vice President Bawumia assured the chiefs and people of even more initiatives to accelerate the development of the north especially and the country as a whole, and urged the voters to give President Nana Akufo-Addo another four years to do more for the people of Ghana.

You can’t win the election with tribalism – Bawumia tells Mahama

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has described as divisive comments by former President Mahama describing President Akufo-Addo and his fellow tribesmen in government as “Akyem Sakawa Boys”.

Mahama endorsed a disparaging and tribal-laced article by repeating the article on his official facebook and highlighting the disparaging portion.

The former President has since come under attack, with many describing his comments as unpresidential.

Addressing a durbar of Chiefs and people of Gushegu on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia expressed surprise and disgust at the former President’s comments, saying Ghana is a united country which has moved beyond the kind of divisive, and tribal politics by the former President.

“The recent utterances of John Mahama referring to Akyem Sakawa boys. How do you take a whole tribe and say they are sakawa. How do you do that?,” Dr. Bawumia said.

The Vice President noted that the person former President Mahama directed his disparaging ethnic attacks to, President Akufo-Addo, is one who is widely acknowledged as a champion of peace, having played a significant role in the resolution of the Dagbon crisis.

“The Paramount Chief of Gushegu, Gushe-Naa, Abdulai Shitobu, has just said and I quote him, “Dagbon owes Nana Akufo-Addo Addo a depth of gratitude.”

“He appreciates what Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has done and Nana Akufo-Addo is not a Dagomba man.”

“He is an Akyem man, and an Akan, who has brought peace to Dagomba land through his effort, along with others to bring peace to Dagbon so we are grateful to him.”

Dr. Bawumia further wondered why former President Mahama disparaged Akyems, who are proud Ghanaians, just as any other tribe.

“Nana Akuffo-Addo, yes he is an Akyem man but he is a Ghanaian, and the Akyem people are proud Ghanaians as other tribes.”

“If you look at our big six, three of them are from Akyem. These are not the kind of people you can blatantly call sakawa boys so we will continue to call on John Mahama to apologise unreservedly for what he has endorsed.”

MESSAGE TO MAHAMA
Dr. Bawumia sent a clear message to former President Mahama that the December elections will be fought on competence and records not on tribal line.

“This election is going to be fought on our records not on tribalism.”

“And my message to John Mahama is that you cannot win the Presidency with tribalism. Ghana has gone beyond tribalism.”

“Come and show your competence in the delivery to the people of Ghana. Because you don’t have competence, you are resorting to tribalism.”

Vice President Bawumia stressed that President Akuffo-Addo, by his deeds, has proved to be a unifier.

“We want unity and we want a President who will unite us. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has demonstrated that he is that President by what he has done not in Dagbon but other places”.
