You said free SHS is a hoax; how then can you make it better? – Bawumia quizzes Mahama

The Vice-President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has questioned the credibility and sincerity of the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in expanding and managing better, the free Senior High School (SHS) policy, after describing it as a hoax.

According to Dr. Bawumia, Mahama, a former President of the land, was a fierce critic of the free SHS policy who travelled across the length and breadth of the country to protest vehemently against the policy, especially, during the 2012 and 2016 electioneering campaigns.

Even in the 2008 electioneering campaign, John Mahama, then a Vice-Presidential candidate spoke against the implementation of the free SHS policy.

But following its successful implementation under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Mahama and the NDC has made a sharp u-turn, promising to make it better and even expand it if Ghanaians give them the mandate to govern the country again in the 2020 general elections.

Interacting with Sunyani-based Nimdie FM on Thursday, September 24, 2020, Dr. Bawumia said Mr. Mahama has no moral right to even talk about the implementation of the free policy with a promise to make it better when he and the NDC has persistently demonstrated that they are against such a policy.

To him, the promise by Mahama and the NDC lacks credibility and urged Ghanaians to ignore them and rather rally behind President Akufo-Addo and the NPP, owners of the free SHS policy, to make it better.

“How can you say you will expand Free SHS when you did not believe in it?” Dr. Bawumia asked Mahama.

He added “Mahama said Free SHS is a hoax. He said it was 419 and he said it is impossible. But after President Akufo-Addo successfully implemented it for the benefit of Ghanaians, he is now going round telling Ghanaians that he will expand it to private schools if Ghanaians vote for him. When Nana Akufo-Addo said he would implement Free SHS to make sure every child goes to school for free, Mahama told Ghanaians that it wasn’t possible and if he had 2 billion cedis, he would not invest it in Free SHS”.
