Adwoa Safo ummoned by NPP disciplinary committee on legal holiday

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally summoned Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome-Kwabenya, to appear before its Disciplinary Committee on Monday, April 7, 2025.

The invitation, contained in a letter dated March 24, 2025, requests her presence at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra. She is to assist in an ongoing inquiry.

According to Ghana’s legal norms, weekends and statutory public holidays are generally exempted days for the service of official notices or the conduct of formal hearings, unless under exceptional circumstances.

The invitation was served in the afternoon of April 6, 2025).

The letter, signed by William Yamoah on behalf of the Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee, Hon. Patrick Boamah stated that Adwoa Safo’s appearance was pursuant to directives from the committee’s leadership.

It advised the former MP for Dome-Kwabenya to bring along any documentary evidence or witnesses and informed her of her right to legal representation during the proceedings.

“The Party remains committed to upholding principles of transparency, fairness, and due process. Your cooperation in this regard is greatly appreciated,” the letter in part read.

The reason behind the disciplinary invitation can be attributed to Adwoa Safo’s recent media outburst, spelling out unfair treatment meted to her by some party faithful.

The party had issued warning to its members to desist from any form of public engagement that has the potential to create more problems for its ongoing efforts to bridge gaps and build unity.

The party’s leadership, however, believes her recent media engagement is an affront to the said directive, which was issued while she was in the midst of a media engagement, hence, the invitation.

The communication was also copied to the NPP’s National Chairman, the General Secretary, and the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, underscoring its seriousness.

Observers argue that scheduling such a hearing on a legal holiday not only raises legal questions but may also expose the party to claims of procedural irregularities or political targeting.

It remains to be seen whether the scheduled hearing will be rescheduled in accordance with legal norms or proceed despite the legal holiday, potentially setting a precedent in the party’s internal disciplinary processes.
