As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) begins discussions on its future direction ahead of the 2028 general elections, Dr. Charles Dwamena, popularly known within political circles as “Dr. China,” is emerging as one of the prominent figures seeking to play a leading role in the party’s rebuilding process.
Currently serving as the National Treasurer of the NPP, Dr. Dwamena has formally expressed interest in becoming the party’s next General Secretary, a position widely regarded as one of the most influential offices within the party’s national structure.
Political observers note that Dr. Dwamena enters the contest with a long record of service spanning diplomacy, party administration, financial management and campaign organization. His supporters argue that this blend of experience makes him well suited to help reposition the party after its recent electoral challenges and prepare it for a competitive 2028 election cycle.
Over the years, Dr. Dwamena has occupied several important roles within the NPP. He previously served as Deputy Ambassador of Ghana to the People’s Republic of China and was also Director of Finance and Administration at the party’s headquarters. He played a key administrative role as Secretary to the NPP’s 2016 National Campaign Team, which coordinated the campaign that led to the party’s victory in the 2016 presidential election.
His involvement with the party extends beyond Ghana’s borders. He was a founding member of the NPP China Branch, later serving two terms as branch chairman. He also chaired the party’s Asia-Pacific Caucus and represented the NPP in various international forums on democratic governance and political party administration.
Supporters of Dr. Dwamena say these experiences have provided him with a deep understanding of how the party operates from the grassroots level to its highest decision-making structures.
At the heart of Dr. Dwamena’s campaign is the slogan, “Let’s Rebuild to Restore the Lost Love.” According to his campaign message, the focus is on restoring confidence within the party, strengthening internal structures and improving engagement with grassroots supporters.
Among the proposals associated with his campaign are initiatives aimed at strengthening polling station structures, improving support for party executives and expanding the use of research and data in decision-making.
He has also advocated programmes focused on political mentorship, entrepreneurship development, human resource empowerment and welfare support for party members and activists.
Another proposal highlighted by his supporters is the development of a modern national headquarters complex that would support administration, training, conferences and the preservation of the NPP’s institutional history.
The upcoming race for General Secretary is expected to generate debate about the kind of leadership required to guide the party in the coming years. Supporters of Dr. Dwamena describe him as a disciplined and decisive administrator who values accountability and organizational efficiency.
They argue that the role of General Secretary requires more than political popularity, demanding strong administrative skills, strategic thinking and the ability to coordinate party structures nationwide. According to them, Dr. Dwamena’s experience as National Treasurer has provided practical exposure to strengthening financial systems and improving internal revenue mobilization within the party.
Beyond politics, Dr. Dwamena has an extensive academic background. He is trained as a medical doctor and also holds advanced qualifications in politics, leadership and administration. His credentials include a PhD in Political Financing, an MSc in Clinical Sciences (Otolaryngology-ENT) from Plymouth University, an MBA in Leadership and Sustainability from the University of Cumbria, and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from Wenzhou Medical University. He also holds a CELTA teaching qualification from Cambridge University.
With internal party discussions increasingly focused on renewal and preparation for the future, the contest for the NPP’s General Secretary position is expected to attract significant attention from delegates across the country.
For supporters of Dr. Charles Dwamena, his blend of administrative experience, international exposure, financial management expertise and party service provides a strong case for his candidacy.
