Kumawu by-election: NPP fixes April 24 for primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fixed April 24, 2023, as date for its parliamentary primary to elect a candidate who will represent the party in the Kumawu by-election contest.

A statement dated Thursday, April 6, 2023, signed by the General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong, and released in Accra, also fixed Tuesday, April 11, 2023, as date for opening of nomination and Friday, April 14, 2023, as date for close of nomination.

The timelines for the primary, according to the statement, was approved at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council meetings held on Monday, April 3, 2024.

The statement further added that at the said meeting, the party also approved “detailed Rules and Regulations to govern the conduct of the parliamentary primary election which could be made available to stakeholders”.

It added that nomination forms will be available at the Constituency Party Office for purchase.

On Friday, March 31, 2023, the Speaker of Parliament declared the Kumawu Parliamentary seat vacant following the passing of the last Philip Basoah on March 28, 2023.

Basoah, 54, died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after he was found unconscious in his room on Friday, March 24, and rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The Speaker in declaring the Kumawu Parliamentary seat vacant noted that the Electoral Commission was officially informed about the MP’s death and waiting for the conduct of a by-election within the next ninety days in accordance with Section 3 of the EC’s Amendment Act 1996 ACT 52.
