Special Prosecutor probes Juaben MCE nominee over bribery allegations

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), has opened investigations into alleged acts of corruption and corruption-related offences against the President’s nominee for the position of Chief Executive for Juaben Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region, Alex K. Sarfo-Kantanka.

The OSP is particularly, investigating Mr. Sarfo-Kantanka on allegation of corruption and intimidation in respect of a public election in relation to his nomination and confirmation as the MCE nominee for Juaben Municipal Assembly.

A letter dated Tuesday, November 2, 2021 signed by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, and addressed to Mr. Sarfo-Kantanka, in part read “The OSP considers you a person necessary for the investigations. You are directed to attend, in person, the offices of the OSP at 6 Haile Selassie Avenue, South Ridge Accra GA-076-0906 on Tuesday, 9 November 2021 at 2:30 in the afternoon for interviewing. You may be accompanied by a counsel of your choice”.

Sarfo-Kantanka’s invitation by the OSP was provoked by viral videos that flooded the internet last week, with the said videos suggesting that he was accusing Assembly Members in Juaben of pocketing his money and refusing to confirm his nomination.

After failing to secure the required number of votes to confirm his nomination, Mr. Sarfo Kantanka was captured in the viral video demanding his bribe money back from the Assembly Members.

It was the second time he was rejected by the Assembly Members.During the first round of voting to confirm him, he only polled six out of a total of 26 votes.

He needed at least 17 votes (two-thirds of the votes) to secure confirmation as MCE.

He was re-nominated by the President believing that his second chance will be a blessing only for the Assembly members to deny him another chance to be the MCE for the area.

He polled 10 votes out of the 26 votes cast, a slightly improved performance over the first round of voting. Having failed to secure the mandate of the people, Sarfo-Kantanka is expected to be replaced by the President.

Unhappy with the outcome of the voting, he started going after the Assembly Members, demanding for the money they took from him with the full assurance of confirming his nomination.
