It’s a major setback for democracy – ECOWAS condemns military coup d’Etat in Burkina Faso

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has described as “a major setback for democracy” the military coup d’Etat rocked Burkina Faso on Monday, January 24, 2022.

The coup led to the resignation of the President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Christian Kabore who came under threat, intimidation and pressure from the military after two days of mutiny.

A statement released by the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja dated, Tuesday, January 25, 2022, condemned the coup and said an Extraordinary Summit will be held in the coming days to review the situation.

It said “despite call by the regional and international community for calm and respect for constitutional legality, the situation in Burkina Faso is characterized by a military coup”.
