Rebecca Akufo-Addo walks the talk; refunds GH₵899k allowances paid her to the State

The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has refunded an amount of GH₵899,097.84 to the State, having earlier, served notice of doing so.

The money was paid in cheque bearing the name Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG), with number 000002. It represents all allowances she took from the State from January 2017 to date.

A letter from the Office of the First Lady signed by Shirley Laryea, and dated Tuesday, July 13, 2021, has since notified the Chief of Staff about the payment.

“I am directed to forward, herewith, a Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited cheque number 000002 for an amount of GH₵899,097.84 being the full refund for monies received from 7th January 2017 to date as allowances given to Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic”, the letter in part read.

Madam Akufo-Addo, had in the midst of the hue and cry over the proposed salaries for First Ladies recommended by the Prof. Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee which was subsequently approved by Parliament on January 6, 2021, served to refund all allowances totaling GH₵899,097.84 paid her from January 2017 to date.

She has also decided not to accept monies that have been allocated to be paid to her pursuant to the recommendations of the Prof. Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee.

“She is doing this as a purely personal decision, without prejudice to the rights of others, and not to undermine the propriety of the process undertaken by Parliament”, a statement signed by the Director of Communications, Office of the First Lady, Korkor Bleboo, and released in Accra on Monday, July 12, 2021 in part read.
