The West African Examination Centre (WAEC) has relocated the examination center from Bright Senior High School to Ofori Panin Senior High School effective Saturday, August 8, 2020.
The interim measure, according to the Council, “is to ensure the integrity of the examination and safeguard the lives of examination officials, invigilators and WAEC Officers assigned to the centre.
The move follows reported cases of assault unleashed on WAEC Officials and media personnel by candidates of Bright Senior High School in Kukurantumi on Thursday, August 6, 2020.
Officials of WAEC has gone to the school to monitor the ongoing exams when the students assaulted them for being too strict in their monitoring exercise.
A journalist from Daily Graphic who got hint of the assaulted case and therefore went to the school to verify the assault case was also sparred.
A statement signed by the Head of National Office, WAEC, Wendy E. Addy-Lamptey, and released in Accra on Friday, August 7, 2020, said the actions of the students were instigated by the proprietor of the school in protest against the enforcement of stipulated examination rules and regulations.
“The Council strongly condemns the behavior of the proprietor and candidates of Bright SHS as reported and wishes to caution that such unruly behavior contravenes Section 8(1) of the WAEC Act, 2006, (Act 719) which frowns on and sanctions acts of assault on examination officials”, the statement in part read.
The Council worried about these unruly behavior of the students, have therefore, served notice that it will not hesitate to sanction Bright SHS as well as staff, students and candidates found culpable in the reported action and future incidents.
“WAEC cautions all school authorities and candidates that it will not hesitate to take legal action against any person involved in compromising the integrity of the examination in any manner. WAEC wishes to use this opportunity to encourage all Supervisors and Invigilators to continue to be vigilant and carry out their duties diligently and without fear”, the statement noted.
