I would’ve been a Professor by now if I had Free SHS opportunity – Bishop Owusu Ansah

The Regional Overseer of Resurrection Living Word International, Accra West, Bishop Yaw Owusu Ansah, has said that if he had the opportunity of attending free Senior High School some twenty-five years ago, he would have become a Professor by now.

According to him, after completing his Middle School Certificate Examination, he was told by his parents that there was no money to further his education anymore.

Having come to terms with it, he then ventured into the craftsmanship business to learn a skill in carpentry.

“I wanted to climb the educational ladder to the highest level but because my parents were poor, after completing my Middle School Certificate Examination, my dreams and aspirations were cut short. I then ventured into carpentry. With what I have experienced in life, I don’t joke with education at all. I did some short courses at GIMPA and University of Ghana just to add value to myself. After completing those courses and seeing where God has placed me, I started sponsoring some brilliant but needy students in society. Education is fundamental to the progress of one’s life. Because I couldn’t speak English, I lost my job at Joy FM as a preacher”, he noted.

He added “So, when I heard that the government was going to introduce free education, I became so happy and started preaching about it. I didn’t know how they were going to fund it but if I, Yaw Owusu Ansah, had got someone to sponsor me after my parents told me they couldn’t pay my school fees anymore or had this free SHS opportunity, to be very honest, I would have attained a PhD and would have even become a Professor. I have been insulted for preaching about Free SHS but I am not disturbed at all because that is how we build a healthy nation. Education is key to building a formidable nation. If you don’t educate the youth, they become street children. I was sponsoring about 40 brilliant but needy students but because of free SHS today, I have been able to save that money for a different purpose. So why shouldn’t I proclaim what God has done for me?”

Bishop Owusu Ansah made this observation in an interview with Accra-based Oman FM on Monday, July 27, 2020.

Commenting further, he said one of the most important benefits of the implementation of the fee-free Senior High School policy is that it has reduced street hawking activities in the country.

According to him, the number of children engaged in street hawking business could have soared over the past last three and half years had it not been the implementation of the government’s pro-poor initiative.

Having witnessed and been an indirect beneficiary of the policy, Bishop Owusu Ansah says his soul and heart are now at peace with themselves since the policy is one of the most fundamental things in building a great nation.

“I have thanked God for this government and any other government that will come and continue to implement this free SHS policy and even deepen it. When this free SHS policy started, children who were engaged in hawking activities on our streets have reduced and that is one of the most important things about this policy”, he noted.
