The Parliament of Ghana will from next sit twice other than the normal four times in a week sittings or five times when there is an extended sitting.
The House will accordingly, sit on Tuesdays and Thursdays barring any changes.
The decision by the legislature was spurred by the recorded positive results of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) of some Members of Parliament (MPs) and staff of the Parliamentary Service.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, at a sitting on Thursday, February 4, 2021, revealed that 15 MPs and 56 staff of the Parliamentary Service have all tested positive of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), therefore, it was important for the House to initiative some preventive measures to protect the lives of all.
He however, did not mention the names of the affected MPs and staff of the Parliamentary Service.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin told the few Members that were in the chamber that all the affected persons have been contacted to self-isolate and adhere to all the COVID-19 safety protocols.
He further announced that per the decision to sit twice in a week, it was important that only Members and staff whose service will be needed the most within the period will be granted access to the legislature and its offices.
According to the Speaker, a total of 227 MPs took part in the COVID-19 testing exercise with some others, submitting private testing results.
44 MPs are yet to avail themselves to the COVID-19 testing.
As at the time of filing this report, members of the Parliamentary Press Corps (PPC) were undergoing COVID-19 testing per the instructions of the Speaker.
